Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure designed to reshape the upper and/or lower eyelids. It is also known as eyelid surgery. The goals of blepharoplasty can include correcting drooping eyelids, eliminating bags of fat under the eyes, tightening loose skin and improving the overall appearance of the eye area.

Here are some key aspects of blepharoplasty:

  • Upper eyelids: Upper eyelid surgery often aims to remove excess skin, fat pockets and sometimes weakened muscles that can contribute to drooping eyelids or a tired appearance.
  • Lower eyelids: For the lower eyelids, blepharoplasty may involve removal of excess skin, fat pockets and tightening of the underlying muscles. Blepharoplasty of all four eyelids may also be indicated in the same operation.

Techniques: The procedure is carried out using conventional surgery, and can be performed under local or general anaesthetic, depending on the case. The incision is hidden in a natural fold of the eyelids.

Resection of excess fatty skin and/or fat repositioning with skin resection alone is evaluated preoperatively (at the consultation) and intraoperatively.

The procedure lasts an average of 1 to 2 hours, with a 24-hour hospital stay. Blepharoplasty can be combined with other types of surgery, but is most frequently associated with a facelift or external canthopexy, a procedure designed to support or reinforce the position of the external angle of the eye, or even change its shape.

  1. Recovery: The recovery period after blepharoplasty varies from person to person, but generally, patients can expect some swelling and sometimes bruising around the eyes for a few days to a week. Normal activities can often be resumed after a few days, although precautions should be taken to avoid unnecessary stress on the eyes during the recovery period.

Risks and complications: As with any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty entails a number of risks, such as infection, hematoma, dry eyes and poor healing.
